Green Globe Artichoke Seeds
Green Globe Artichoke Seeds produce one of the finest and most widely grown globe artichoke varieties available. Renowned for its large, compact flower buds, excellent flavour and impressive ornamental appearance, Green Globe has been a favourite of gardeners and professional growers for generations.
A hardy perennial, Green Globe develops magnificent silver-green foliage that creates a dramatic architectural feature in both vegetable gardens and mixed borders. Left unharvested, the flower buds open into spectacular violet-blue thistle-like blooms that attract bees and other beneficial pollinating insects, making this variety as valuable for wildlife as it is for the kitchen.
The edible portion is the immature flower bud. Harvested before opening, the fleshy scales and tender heart are considered a culinary delicacy with a rich, nutty flavour. They are delicious steamed, boiled or grilled and served simply with melted butter, vinaigrette or hollandaise sauce.
Sowing Green Globe Artichoke Seeds
Sow indoors from February to April in modules or small pots using a quality seed compost.
Sow seed approximately 10 mm deep and maintain a temperature of 18–22°C until germination, which usually occurs within 10–21 days.
Grow seedlings on in good light before hardening off thoroughly after the risk of frost has passed.
Alternatively, seed may be sown outdoors from April onwards once soils have warmed sufficiently.
Planting Out
Choose a fertile, well-drained position in full sun.
Space plants approximately 90–120 cm apart, allowing sufficient room for their impressive mature size.
Incorporating well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting will improve soil fertility and moisture retention.
Water regularly during dry periods while plants establish.
Growing On
Green Globe Artichokes benefit from regular watering throughout the growing season, particularly while flower buds are forming.
Apply a balanced fertiliser during spring and mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to maintain soil fertility.
Remove flower stems after harvesting and tidy old foliage during winter before fresh growth appears in spring.
In colder parts of the UK, protect crowns with straw or horticultural fleece during severe winter weather.
Harvesting
Harvest buds while they remain tight and compact, before the scales begin to open.
Cut the main central bud first, which encourages smaller side shoots to develop and extend the harvesting season.
Freshly harvested artichokes are best eaten soon after picking for maximum flavour and tenderness.
