Cabbage Winter Jewel Seeds
Cabbage ‘Winter Jewel’ is a premium overwintering spring cabbage that provides fresh, home-grown greens when little else is available from the vegetable garden. An RHS Award of Garden Merit variety, it is renowned for its exceptional winter hardiness, reliable performance and delicious sweet flavour. Plants produce smooth, dark green leaves that can be harvested young as tender spring greens or left to develop compact, loose hearts for cutting whole.
Sown during spring or early summer, ‘Winter Jewel’ establishes strong plants before winter, remaining hardy throughout the coldest months before producing vigorous new growth in early spring. Its excellent resistance to bolting ensures a long harvesting season, while its compact habit makes it suitable for gardens, allotments and raised beds. Whether lightly steamed, stir-fried or added to soups, casseroles and traditional spring dishes, it provides superb flavour and outstanding nutritional value.
Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds from March to June in seed trays, modules or an outdoor seedbed. Sow approximately 1cm deep using quality seed compost and maintain a temperature of 15–20°C for reliable germination.
When seedlings have developed several true leaves, harden them off before transplanting into fertile, well-prepared soil. Space plants 45cm apart with 60cm between rows to allow healthy growth through autumn and winter.
Growing On
Grow in a sunny position in firm, fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with organic matter. Water during prolonged dry periods and keep the area weed-free. Protect young plants from pigeons and cabbage white butterflies with suitable netting where necessary.
Plants establish during autumn, remain hardy throughout winter and produce vigorous growth as temperatures rise in spring.
Harvesting
Harvest from February to May. Pick individual leaves as nutritious spring greens, or leave plants to develop loose, compact hearts before cutting whole. The tender leaves have a sweet, delicate flavour and are ideal for steaming, stir-fries, soups, casseroles and traditional spring vegetables.
