Cabbage Filderkraut Seeds
Cabbage ‘Filderkraut’ is a distinctive heritage pointed cabbage originating from the Filder region of southern Germany, where it has been cultivated for centuries and is celebrated for producing exceptional sauerkraut. Unlike traditional round cabbages, it develops large, elegant pointed heads with fine, tender leaves, a crisp texture and naturally sweet flavour. The heads can reach up to 4.5kg (10lb) under good growing conditions, making this an excellent choice for gardeners looking for both quality and impressive yields.
The fine leaf structure contains fewer thick ribs than conventional white cabbages, making it particularly suitable for shredding and fermenting into authentic sauerkraut. It is equally delicious eaten fresh in salads and coleslaw, lightly steamed, braised or roasted. Its attractive pointed shape also makes it a striking addition to the vegetable garden, while its vigorous growth and dependable performance ensure reliable harvests year after year.
Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds from March to April in modules or seed trays using a quality seed compost. Cover the seed lightly with compost and maintain a temperature of 15–20°C for reliable germination.
Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, harden them off before transplanting outdoors. Plant in fertile, well-prepared soil, spacing plants approximately 45cm apart with 60cm between rows to allow the large heads to develop fully.
Growing On
Grow in a sunny position in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during dry periods and feed as required to encourage strong, uninterrupted growth. Keep the crop free from weeds and protect young plants from pigeons and cabbage white butterflies using suitable netting.
As with all brassicas, avoid planting where clubroot is known to be present.
Harvesting
Harvest from late summer through autumn, once the large pointed heads are firm and fully developed. The sweet, tender leaves are ideal for making traditional sauerkraut, but are equally suitable for fresh salads, coleslaw, steaming, stir-fries and roasting. Large heads also store well for several weeks in cool conditions.
