Brussels Sprout Hector F1 Seeds
Brussels Sprout ‘Hector’ F1 Often seen in M&S Foodstores, a  modern early mid-season hybrid bred to produce premium-quality sprouts with outstanding reliability and excellent flavour. Vigorous, sturdy plants develop a tall, upright habit carrying a large number of smooth, dark green buttons that are evenly spaced along the stem. Its dependable performance, heavy yields and mild, sweet flavour have made it an excellent choice for both home gardeners and commercial growers.
One of the outstanding qualities of Hector’ F1Â is its excellent plant structure. The strong stems support a generous crop of medium-sized sprouts with a small butt, making harvesting easier while producing an attractive, uniform crop. The plants are noted for their resistance to leaf and button diseases, helping maintain healthy growth throughout the season. The firm sprouts have a sweet, delicate flavour with excellent texture, making them ideal for steaming, roasting, stir-frying or serving alongside traditional autumn meals. Harvests begin from the end of September and continue through to mid-November, providing fresh home-grown sprouts well before the main Christmas varieties mature.
Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds from March to April in modules, seed trays or a prepared seedbed using a quality seed compost. Cover seeds lightly with compost and keep evenly moist during germination.
When seedlings have developed several true leaves, harden them off before transplanting into fertile, firm soil in a sunny position. Space plants approximately 40–60cm apart, allowing 60–75cm between rows for good air circulation and strong development. Avoid planting on land affected by clubroot and firm the soil well around each plant after transplanting.
Growing On
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter. Apply a balanced fertiliser before planting and water regularly during dry spells to encourage steady growth and well-filled sprouts.
Protect plants from cabbage white butterflies, caterpillars and pigeons using insect-proof netting where necessary. Keep the area weed-free and practise crop rotation to reduce the risk of brassica diseases. Strong, upright plants stand well in autumn weather and continue producing high-quality sprouts over an extended harvesting period.
Harvesting
Harvest from late September to mid-November, picking the firm sprouts from the bottom of the stem upwards as they mature. The smooth, dark green buttons have excellent texture and a mild, sweet flavour, making them perfect for steaming, roasting, stir-fries and traditional roast dinners. Regular harvesting ensures the sprouts remain at their very best.
