Brussels Sprout Caractacus F1 Seeds
Brussels Sprout ‘Caractacus’ F1 is an outstanding late-season hybrid developed to produce premium-quality sprouts during the coldest months of the year. Bred for reliable winter production, this vigorous variety develops tall, sturdy plants carrying abundant, uniform, dark green buttons with excellent firmness and flavour. Its exceptional frost tolerance makes it one of the finest choices for gardeners who want fresh home-grown Brussels sprouts well into the New Year.
One of the greatest strengths of Caractacus F1 is its remarkable holding ability. The well-filled sprouts remain firm and attractive on the stem for an extended period, allowing harvesting over several weeks without compromising quality. The plants also display excellent leaf drop, making harvesting quicker and easier. Whether steamed, roasted, stir-fried or served with traditional winter roasts, the sweet, tender sprouts develop an even richer flavour after exposure to frosty weather. This dependable variety is equally suitable for home gardeners and commercial production.
Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds from March to April in seed trays, modules or a prepared seedbed using a quality seed compost. Cover lightly with compost and keep evenly moist until germination.
When seedlings have developed several true leaves, harden them off before transplanting into fertile, firm soil in a sunny position. Space plants approximately 60cm apart, allowing 60–75cm between rows. Firm the soil well around each plant to encourage sturdy stems and reduce wind rock.
Growing On
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter. Apply a balanced fertiliser before planting and water regularly during dry periods to maintain steady growth throughout the season.
Protect plants from pigeons, cabbage white butterflies and caterpillars using fine netting where necessary. Remove any yellowing lower leaves as the crop matures to improve airflow, and rotate brassica crops annually to reduce the risk of soil-borne diseases. Strong plants will stand well through winter and continue producing excellent-quality sprouts during the coldest months.
Harvesting
Harvest from January to February, picking the firm sprouts from the base of the stem upwards as they mature. Thanks to their exceptional frost tolerance and excellent holding ability, the sprouts remain in prime condition on the plant over an extended period. The sweet, firm buttons are delicious steamed, roasted, stir-fried or served alongside traditional winter meals.
