Sowing & Propagation

When seedlings have developed several true leaves, harden them off before planting outside. Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart, leaving 60cm between rows to allow the large heads to develop fully.
Growing On
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with well-rotted compost or organic matter in a sunny position. Water regularly during dry weather to encourage uninterrupted growth and maintain head quality. Keep the crop free from weeds and protect young plants from pigeons and cabbage white butterflies with suitable netting where necessary.
Apply a balanced fertiliser during the growing season to encourage vigorous growth and maximum yields.
Harvesting
Harvest from September to November, once the heads are firm and fully developed. The beautifully blistered leaves retain their texture and flavour during cooking, making them ideal for steaming, braising, soups, stir-fries and hearty winter meals.
