Cabbage Dutchman F1 Seeds
Cabbage ‘Dutchman’ F1 is an outstanding pointed summer cabbage, prized for its compact, cone-shaped heads, crisp texture and exceptionally sweet flavour. An RHS Award of Garden Merit variety, it is a favourite with home gardeners thanks to its reliable performance, attractive appearance and excellent eating quality. Its naturally compact habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens, raised beds and allotments, while closer planting allows excellent use of available space.
Producing firm, well-filled heads with a small internal core, ‘Dutchman’ F1 is perfect for harvesting throughout summer and early autumn. The tender leaves are delicious eaten raw in salads and coleslaws or lightly steamed, stir-fried and added to a wide range of fresh seasonal dishes. The variety also holds well once mature, allowing a more flexible harvesting period without a rapid loss of quality. In addition, it shows good resistance to bolting and white blister, helping to produce dependable crops under UK growing conditions.
Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds from March to May in seed trays or modules under cover, or directly outdoors into a prepared seedbed from late March onwards. Sow seed approximately 1cm deep in quality seed compost and maintain a temperature of 10–15°Cfor reliable germination.
When seedlings have developed several true leaves, harden them off before transplanting into their final growing position. Space plants 30–40cm apart with 45cm between rows, although they may be planted more closely if smaller heads are preferred.
Growing On
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with organic matter in a sunny position. Keep plants well watered during dry periods to encourage uninterrupted growth and firm heads. Protect young plants with netting where necessary against pigeons and cabbage white butterflies, and keep the crop free from weeds throughout the growing season.
Harvesting
Harvest from June through to October, cutting the heads once they are firm and well developed. The compact pointed heads are ideal for fresh salads, coleslaw, steaming and stir-frying. Their naturally sweet flavour and tender texture make them one of the finest cabbages for summer use.
