Onion Toughball F1 Seeds
The tried and tested  Onion Toughball F1 is a deep golden brown onion with skins that do not split easily. Introduced by us in the early 90s.
One for the kitchen and the show bench. Winner of thousands of red cards on the show bench.
Onion Toughball F1 has earned an outstanding reputation among UK gardeners and exhibition growers as one of the finest overwintering onions available. Introduced by Fosters Seeds during the early 1990s, this reliable hybrid consistently produces attractive, globe-shaped onions with rich golden-brown skins, excellent uniformity and dependable yields. Equally at home in the vegetable garden or on the show bench, Toughball F1 has won thousands of red cards at horticultural shows thanks to its superb shape, clean skins and outstanding presentation.
The vigorous plants establish rapidly when sown in late summer, developing a strong root system before winter. As temperatures rise in spring, they quickly resume growth, producing medium to large globe-shaped bulbs with firm white flesh and attractive deep golden-brown skins that resist splitting. Toughball F1 also offers good tolerance to bolting, Botrytis and downy mildew, making it particularly dependable for overwinter production in the UK’s variable climate. These qualities help maintain healthy foliage and encourage the development of large, well-filled bulbs.
The crisp, mild flavour makes Toughball F1 an excellent all-round kitchen onion, suitable for salads, sandwiches, roasting, soups, casseroles and everyday cooking. The attractive bulbs cure well after harvest and store successfully when properly ripened. For exhibition growers, the variety responds exceptionally well to protected cultivation, producing clean, unblemished bulbs with outstanding show quality. Each packet contains approximately 120 seeds, usually more, providing excellent value for both competitive exhibitors and home gardeners.

Sowing & Propagation
For the best overwintered crop, sow seeds in modules or small pots during August or September using a quality seed compost. Grow the seedlings until well established before planting under cover during October.
Alternatively, sow in January in a greenhouse maintained at approximately 18°C. Transplant seedlings at the three to four leaf stage, spacing plants 15 cm (6 inches) apart in fertile, well-prepared soil.
Growing On
Choose a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil enriched with generous quantities of well-rotted compost or manure. Keep plants well watered during dry spells and maintain a weed-free growing area throughout the season.
Apply a balanced fertiliser during early growth before switching to a higher potash feed as bulbs begin to swell. Toughball F1’s strong disease tolerance and resistance to splitting help produce clean, healthy bulbs with excellent skin quality. Exhibition growers achieve the finest specimens by growing under cover, where bulbs remain clean and free from weather blemishes.
Harvesting
Harvest from July to August, once the foliage naturally begins to yellow and fall over. Lift the bulbs carefully on a dry day and allow them to cure thoroughly.
For maximum storage quality and excellent skin finish, ripen the onions in a cool, completely dark, well-ventilated building with plenty of forced air circulation, as recommended by Fosters Seeds. Proper curing improves both storage life and exhibition appearance.
