Leek Fencer F1 is an outstanding hybrid variety bred to deliver exceptional uniformity, vigour and reliable yields. Fencer F1 matures during the autumn and early winter, producing long, well-blanched stems with excellent weight and texture. The thick white stems are easy to clean and prepare, while the upright foliage helps reduce soil contamination during harvesting. Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds from January to April in seed trays or modules using a quality seed compost. Sow approximately 1 cm deepand maintain a temperature of 15 to 20°C. Germination usually occurs within 10 to 21 days.
When seedlings reach approximately 15 to 20 cm tall and are about the thickness of a pencil, transplant them into their final growing position. Dib holes around 15 cm deep, spacing plants 15 cm apart with 30 to 45 cm between rows. Water the holes after planting to wash soil around the roots naturally, encouraging long, well-blanched stems.
Growing On
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly during dry weather to maintain uninterrupted growth and feed occasionally with a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong stem development.
Keep the crop free from weeds and earth up lightly around the stems during the growing season if additional blanching is required. Protect young plants from leek moth where necessary using insect-proof netting. Fencer F1 has been bred for vigorous growth, excellent uniformity and dependable field performance, making it particularly well suited to UK growing conditions.
Harvesting
Harvest from September through December, lifting plants carefully with a fork to avoid damaging the long white stems. Harvest as required, leaving remaining plants in the ground until needed. The sweet, tender stems are excellent for fresh cooking and retain their quality well after lifting.
