Giant Marrow Seeds

Giant Marrow Long Green Reselected has been carefully developed for growers who want to produce truly spectacular vegetables. Selected from outstanding parent plants that have produced marrows weighing over 50 lb, this exceptional strain offers the genetics needed to grow enormous fruits under the right cultivation. Whether you enjoy exhibiting giant vegetables, entering local horticultural shows or simply want the satisfaction of growing something extraordinary, these seeds provide an excellent starting point.

The vigorous trailing plants produce large, creamy white to pale green marrows with smooth skins and excellent growing potential. Given fertile soil, regular feeding, consistent watering and plenty of space, individual fruits can reach remarkable sizes. While many growers aim for competition-winning specimens, younger fruits harvested before full maturity are also delicious for stuffing, roasting, soups and traditional marrow recipes. If left to mature fully, the fruits develop firm skins, making them suitable for storage after harvest. Giant marrow growing is both enjoyable and rewarding, making it an excellent project for experienced vegetable growers and families alike.

Sowing & Propagation

Sow seeds from March to April in 9 cm pots or modules filled with a quality seed compost. Sow each seed individually on its edge approximately 2 cm deep and maintain a temperature of around 20°C. Germination usually occurs within 7 to 14 days.

Grow seedlings in a bright, frost-free greenhouse or propagator until all risk of frost has passed. Harden plants off carefully before planting outdoors in late May or early June.

Growing On

Choose a sunny, sheltered position with deep, fertile soil enriched with generous quantities of well-rotted farmyard manure or garden compost. Allow at least 2 to 3 metres between plants, as vigorous trailing stems require plenty of room to spread.

Water generously throughout the growing season, particularly once fruits begin to swell. Feed weekly with a high-potash fertiliser to encourage strong growth and fruit development. For competition-sized marrows, many growers allow just one or two fruits per plant, removing surplus fruits so the plant directs its energy into producing maximum size. Placing the developing fruit on a wooden board or straw helps keep it clean and reduces the risk of rotting.

Harvesting

Harvest from August to October, depending on the intended use. For eating, pick fruits while they are still relatively young and tender. For exhibition or giant vegetable competitions, leave the selected fruit to reach its maximum size before harvesting carefully with a sharp knife, leaving a section of stem attached. Mature marrows also store well in cool, dry conditions for several weeks.
