Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds from March to May in modules or seed trays using a quality seed compost. Cover the seed lightly with compost and maintain a temperature of 15–20°C for reliable germination.
When seedlings have developed several true leaves, harden them off before transplanting into their final growing position. Plant 45–60cm apart, allowing 60cm between rows to provide ample space for the heads to develop.
Growing On
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter in a sunny position. Water regularly throughout the growing season, particularly during dry weather, to encourage uninterrupted growth and firm, well-filled heads. Keep the crop free from weeds and protect young plants from pigeons and cabbage white butterflies with suitable netting where necessary.
Applying a balanced fertiliser during the growing season will help maximise head size and crop quality.
Harvesting
Harvest from September to November, cutting the heads once they are firm and fully developed. The dense, crisp leaves are excellent for steaming, boiling, stir-fries, soups and traditional cabbage dishes. Thanks to their excellent keeping quality, the heads also store well under cool conditions for use later in the season.
