Onion Red Barron F1 Seeds
Onion Red Barron F1 is a premium hybrid red onion that combines attractive appearance with excellent flavour, dependable yields and outstanding keeping quality. Producing uniform, globe-shaped bulbs with rich deep red skins and crisp white flesh ringed with vibrant red, it is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to grow high-quality onions for both the kitchen and the show bench. Its vigorous growth and reliable performance make it suitable for gardens, allotments and exhibition growers throughout the UK.
The smooth, firm bulbs develop an attractive glossy finish and have a pleasantly mild, sweet flavour that makes them ideal for fresh salads, sandwiches and salsas, while also performing exceptionally well when roasted, grilled or caramelised. Unlike many red onions, Red Barron F1 also stores remarkably well, allowing home-grown onions to be enjoyed well into the winter months after harvesting. The attractive colour is retained during storage, making this variety as visually appealing as it is productive.
Thanks to its hybrid vigour, Onion Red Barron F1 produces consistent crops of uniform bulbs with excellent skin quality and good resistance to splitting. The attractive appearance also makes it a popular choice for exhibition growers, where evenly shaped bulbs with bright, unblemished skins are highly prized. Whether your aim is to grow reliable kitchen onions or produce exhibition-quality specimens, this variety offers outstanding all-round performance.

Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds from January to March under glass or in a heated propagator at approximately 18 to 20°C. Sow thinly into trays or modules using a quality seed compost and cover lightly with compost or vermiculite. Germination usually occurs within 10 to 14 days.
When seedlings reach the three to four leaf stage, harden them off before planting outdoors after the risk of severe frost has passed. Space plants approximately 15 cm apart, allowing 30 cm between rows for optimum bulb development.
Growing On
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny, open position. Incorporate well-rotted compost before planting and keep the crop free from weeds throughout the growing season. Water regularly during dry periods, particularly while the bulbs are swelling, to maintain steady growth.
Apply a balanced fertiliser during early growth, avoiding excessive nitrogen later in the season, which can reduce storage quality. Good air circulation and careful watering will help produce clean, healthy bulbs with excellent colour and skin finish. Hybrid vigour ensures strong growth and dependable cropping even under variable UK growing conditions.
Harvesting
Harvest from August to September, once the foliage naturally begins to yellow and fall over. Lift bulbs carefully on a dry day and allow them to cure in a warm, airy location for two to three weeks before storing.
Properly cured bulbs have excellent keeping qualities and will store for several months in a cool, dry, frost-free environment while retaining their attractive colour and flavour.
