Carrot Sweet Candle F1 Seeds
Carrot ‘Sweet Candle’ F1 is widely regarded as one of the finest exhibition carrots available and has become a favourite with gardeners who demand exceptional flavour as well as outstanding appearance. This premium Japanese-bred F1 hybrid produces beautifully smooth, cylindrical roots with rounded tips, rich orange skin and almost coreless flesh. Its remarkable uniformity has earned it the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), recognising its excellent garden performance and reliability.
Producing heavy crops of attractive carrots with crisp, tender flesh and an exceptionally sweet flavour, Sweet Candle F1is equally at home in the kitchen or on the exhibition bench. The roots remain remarkably consistent in size and shape, making them ideal for competitive vegetable shows and attractive market displays. Gardeners also appreciate the variety’s ability to produce reliable crops across a wide range of soil types, provided the ground is deep, fertile and free from stones. Whether eaten fresh, grated into salads, steamed, roasted or added to soups and casseroles, the carrots retain their vibrant colour and delicious sweetness. Sown from spring onwards, they provide generous harvests from late summer into autumn.
Sowing & Propagation
Sow seeds directly outdoors from March to July into finely prepared, fertile, stone-free soil in a sunny position. Draw shallow drills approximately 1cm deep, spacing rows around 30cm apart. Sow the seed thinly and cover lightly with fine soil.
Once seedlings have emerged, thin carefully to leave 5 to 8cm between plants. Avoid sowing into freshly manured soil, as this may cause forked roots. For exhibition-quality carrots, many growers prefer deep raised beds or large containers filled with a fine loam such as John Innes No. 2 compost to encourage perfectly straight roots.
Growing On
Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season to encourage continuous root development and prevent splitting. Weed regularly and avoid disturbing neighbouring plants when thinning.
Protect crops from carrot root fly by using fine insect-proof mesh or horticultural fleece where required. Rotate crops annually to reduce the build-up of soil-borne pests and diseases. In well-prepared soil, Sweet Candle F1 produces exceptionally smooth, uniform carrots with outstanding reliability.
Harvesting
Harvest from July through October and into November, depending on sowing date. Lift the carrots carefully with a garden fork to avoid damaging the roots. The smooth, almost coreless carrots have a crisp texture and exceptional sweetness, making them ideal for salads, roasting, steaming, soups, casseroles and juicing. They also produce beautifully uniform specimens for exhibition and competitive vegetable shows.
